2010 International Summer Institute Sunday, June 13 - Friday, June 18, 2010 Do you wish you had a better understanding of the history and practices of the world's major religions? Would you like to learn respectful and inclusive ways to teach about religious and cultural values in your classroom? If so, plan to attend this week-long professional development workshop for multi-disciplinary approaches to understanding and teaching world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Shintoism, Taoism, and diasporic religious practices of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Topics expected to be covered include history, theology and ethics; language; rituals, celebrations, and cultural practices; gender; and science and nature. Interwove throughout the workshop will be discussions of architecture; music and art; birth and death; geography; and - of course - food. The workshop format includes presentations by experts, access to resources, and facilitated discussions on pedagogical approaches for elementary and secondary classrooms, such as inquiry and problem-based learning, mediation and deliberation, and essential questions and enduring understandings. All K-16 educators are welcome. Credit: Participating teachers will receive CPDUs (for Illinois teachers) or University of Illinois CEUs for non-Illinois teachers. Cost: The registration fee is $100. The covers all course and housing costs and some of the meals. This fee is non-refundable. Housing: Housing (single rooms, shared baths) will be provided at the Illinois Street Residence Halls June 13-18. Housing is available for Friday night, June 18, at an additional charge.
